Back up and running!

Had a bit of a break from Alien and Dog- once again we're back! I was busy this last month working on illustrating for some Teachers Pay Teachers projects, which can be seen by clicking here HERE.

This cartoon came to me because it seems people always tell me they think it's funny how Geel the alien has a protruding gut. When drawing this character I honestly didn't even think about it and realize I was drawing him like that- so I find it funny how often I've had people point this out.

I have also been making an effort to exercise more and been shootin' hoops a lot lately and that is shown in this cartoon as well. Thanks for looking- another Alien and Dog cartoon comin' soon....

Common Interests

Just another reason why aliens and dogs get along so well...

I know I just posted a cartoon yesterday, but I don't like sitting on finished work- so here's another one. It was good to do a 'down to earth' cartoon without aliens and spaceships and all that.
Working on this cartoon, I felt that it was a throwback to an earlier Alien and Dog, which had the two of them eating trash. Also, Kevin's dog friend appeared once before in this previous cartoon.

Gangnam Style

There are some things you can't escape in this world. Right now that thing is the South Korean pop song 'Gangnam Style', which become a world wide phenomenon and is still rising in popularity.  I read that the music video has 530 million views on Youtube. Even watching football I was subjected to two football players breaking out into 'Gangnam Style' dance moves.

3 YEARS of Alien and Dog!

I posted the first Alien and Dog cartoon on October 9th 2009. And here I am today (ok, today is the 10th, ridiculously busy yesterday!) continuing the ongoing adventures of my characters. While I've had some creative dry spots at times (see 2011!!), I have seen a lot progress in my drawings and cartooning techniques with hopes to only get stronger. I do this cartoon for myself and my enjoyment, but it pleases me greatly that other people have also enjoyed it. As of right now, I average about 1000 views a month and if you are someone who takes time to read a cartoon of mine- I THANK YOU!! We'll see what happens down the road- I would love to someday self publish a compilation of cartoons or come up with Alien and Dog merchandise, like posters or t-shirts. Stay tuned!

Crash Landing

I am loving working in a three panel format- I think I work better in smaller spaces than in one large one. Why did I wait so long to do this?
Also, this wasn't the first time the two were stranded by the bad guys...

Garbage Visitor

Alien and Dog is normally done in a one panel format but I felt it was time to switch it up a bit. I think I will try to switch between multiple and single panels from now on. Just tryin to keep things interesting!

This cartoon features a Star Wars gag- the eyeball alien coming out of the garbage is suppose to bare a resemblance to the thing that pops out when Skywalker and gang are in the trash compactor, from the original Star Wars film. Here's the scene on youtube if anyone is in the mood for a lil Star Wars. Til next time...

The Trouble with Twitter

Gotta be careful what you write on Twitter! Eh, what's the fun in that though.... ? I must admit I find it amusing how sometimes a person can write a single sentence and manage to piss off millions of people from it, and this cartoon is a reflection of that.

Fantasy Football = Serious Business

There's two kinds of people in this world- those who consider fantasy football to be a game...and those who don't. Geel obviously belongs in the second group.

I was looking through old Alien and Dog cartoons for ideas and I've done a couple of previous fantasy football cartoons- figured it was time for another one! Here were the previous ones:

Gameday!

I've made it well known I am a die hard Packers fan, being from Wisconsin and all, and therefore feel the need to do a another football cartoon. In the spirit of the first NFL Sunday of games, here's some more past football related Alien and Dog cartoons: HERE, HERE, and HERE. And oh yeah- GO PACK GO!

Transmitting new song from Mars...

My last Curiosity/Mars themed cartoon has been getting lots of views, so I figured I would do another. A couple of days ago, Will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas had a new song broadcast from the rover on Mars. I gave the song, titled 'Reach for the Stars,' a listen- this cartoon was my reaction...

On a more serious note, I am glad people are so interested in Curiosity on Mars and there is excitement about our space program again. It's such a positive thing among all the bad stuff that goes on these days...hopefully it continues!

One more thing- I think this is the first Alien and Dog cartoon to not feature the two main characters. The 'alien pet' in this one was seen in a previous cartoon.

The NEW iPhone

Technology sure is crazy these days. Advancements are made so fast that we barely have time to digest the most recent gadget before a new version of it comes. And I'm also not exactly sure why an alien who has time traveling technology would necessarily be interested in a smartphone.

Roller Coaster Ride

This possibly could be my weirdest cartoon I've done. I'm sure that's debatable. But I'm heading off to an amusement park today and had my mind on roller coasters -in fact, I think I remember being on a ride called the 'Black Hole' somewhere before...

Kevin the dog's line in this cartoon is actually lifted from the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. While in different context, I thought a ride through a black hole was an appropriate fit for the quote.

Also, a previous Alien and Dog cartoon touched on the dangers of entering a black hole...

Til next time!

Shark Week

Shark Week is of course the week devoted on the Discover Channel to all things sharks. I read it is their 25th anniversary of the event and I thought to myself- I think I can draw a cool looking shark (and yes I was pleased with how my cartoon shark turned out).

Visit to Mars

I have loved seeing the images of Mars coming from the Curiosity land rover. Total awesomeness. I felt like doing a cartoon about it, and this is what I came up with! Foofy the cat appeared in a couple of previous Alien and Dog cartoons, which can be seen HERE and HERE. I don't think Foofy will be appearing again.

The Olympics

It has been a month since the last Alien and Dog. I took a little vacation, among other things, and I subsequently feel more energized creatively. There should be more consistent posting for the time being. Definitely a lot of crazy stuff in the news these days, so ideas should be easy to come by! This is my Olympics cartoon...

Flipping the Bird(s)

This cartoon was completed very quickly, and turned out kinda silly, but I hope you enjoy it.
Also, this isn't the first time they've encountered some road rage in outer space....

Grand Finale Firework

Dang it's almost already the 4th of July! Where's the summer going? Feels good to get a new cartoon up, I had a long stretch of work and had the flu this past week- sucky.

BOOM

This one is supposed to be a play on the popular GPS warning that goes 'The current route includes toll roads, would you like to avoid?' And then somehow you end up on the dang toll road anyways...  And while I'm not sure this idea comes through in the cartoon exactly, I hope you enjoy checking out my latest. Also, I did a new title image at the top of this page!

Dancing Queen

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I have gone through an ABBA phase. Recently. I caught myself humming 'Take A Chance On Me' the other day and decided I needed some ABBA in a cartoon. Also, my cartoons have been getting done a lot faster now with my graphics tablet and that pleases me (and hopefully you too).

Kevin Durant has the best nickname.

Not a lot of people refer to him by his nickname, and that's a shame. I'm no Thunder fan, but that guy is one bad dude. Hope OKC wins the championship this year (it's no secret I despise the Miami Heat).

Get Rid of Stubborn Fat!

Finally, a new cartoon- all done on my new graphics tablet! Ok, so obviously bacteria of this nature is a serious matter and no disrespect is meant toward anyone's medical struggles with such a thing. This cartoon is merely a riff on the old 'tapeworm diet' hollywood myth from long ago, as well as a veiled jab at pharmaceutical companies and how they will market (almost) anything to the desperate.

Studio Update

So I recently purchased a graphics tablet. Before I would draw my cartoons in pen and ink and scan the drawing into the computer. But now I can draw directly into Photoshop on my tablet (as many illustrator and cartoonists do). It's taking time to get it down, but I've seen progress- here's a drawing of Kevin I recently did entirely on the tablet:

So I've been doing a lot of sketching and seeing if this new method will improve the quality and quanity of my artwork. Hopefully I will feel confident and do a whole cartoon on it very soon!

High Up Above

I had a hard time thinking of ideas for a cartoon the last couple of days. When that happens, I usually resort to bathroom humor. Enjoy.

The Big Guns

Finally, a new cartoon. For some reason I began thinking about how NERF toys were popular back when I was a kid. They are still around, but not sure if the kiddies are still crazy about them. As a young kid into sci fi, I always thought NERF guns with foam balls and darts looked like big alien weaponry and I enjoyed incorporating those thoughts into this cartoon.

The Playoffs

Well it's been a good week since a new cartoon, been a little busy, and been watching a little too much basketball. In fact, I will be attending the Spurs/Thunder game in San Antonio tonight. I should get a new cartoon up tomorrow, but for today I will post some past basketball related Alien and Dog cartoons in the spirit of the NBA playoffs.

Back in the day, Geel got to know KG a little bit...

....Alien and Dog had a little say in Lebron's big decision on where to play...

....and were surprised by a certain team's exit last year.
Thanks for lookin', see ya soon.

Nerd Swag

Seems like big black rimmed glasses and nerdy attire is starting to become popular- or 'nerd swag' as I've heard it referred to. I've noticed this recently among celebrities and sports stars mostly. Why couldn't this have been the rage 10 years ago? I would have been the man.

Deep-Fried

So how did this cartoon come about? Well, a buddy bought me a deep fryer for my birthday awhile back and I finally decided to get it going recently.  Now I've been dunking anything and everything in there. Probably not the best for me, but it sure tastes good.

Wanted: New Earth

I was reading an article and came across a statement that definitely hit me a bit- 'We are living as if we have an extra planet at our disposal'. It's so true, and pretty sad really. Although probably the last thing humans need is another planet to ruin....ok, I promise my next cartoon will be more lighthearted!

Happy Mother's Day!

Just want to give a shout out to all the great mothers out there! And I've got the best mom ever, she is a wonderful lady! Thanks for all you do!
As for these alien flowers, it's already been established that the plant-life on Geel's homeworld is right out of Little Shop of Horrors. Also, this is the first time we've seen Geel's mother- although his grandmother has shown up before.

Must See The Avengers!

I haven't seen The Avengers yet, but I will probably go tomorrow sometime. I heard it's awesome, plus its already made like a billion dollars at the box office. Since I'm a big movie buff, I wanted to throw out a mention of The Avengers in a cartoon. The weird blue thing in the background is the alien visitor's spaceship- I had a lot more of it drawn but had to crop it off when trying to make my composition better...anyways, til next time...

Sun Tan

I kept hearing stuff on the news about a lady supposedly letting her 5 yr old in a tanning booth, and while this cartoon isn't about that particular story, it got me thinking about doing a cartoon about tanning booths somehow. Also enjoyed creating the image of the sun- always fun messing around in Photoshop. After finishing the cartoon, I realized a past Alien and Dog cartoon basically contradicts Geel's desire to catch a tan in this one.

May the Fourth be with you!

Since Alien and Dog is a pretty nerdy cartoon, I feel the need to exclaim: Happy Star Wars Day!!!
In celebration, here are a few links to some past Alien and Dog cartoons with Star Wars references: HERE, HERE, and HERE.

Courtesy Check

You can probably guess how I got inspired for this cartoon. Been a busy week of work, but a stretch of days off coming up usually means a bunch of new cartoons so keep yo eyes open for more Alien and Dog!

Fool's Gold

I recently read an article on how asteroid mining may not be too far off in the future...particularly for minerals and valuable metal such as platinum and gold. It was an interesting read. I also remembered back in elementary school some kids having pyrite, or 'fool's gold', and going around saying they had pieces of real gold (the stuff does look kinda legit). All of these little things led to this cartoon that I whipped up pretty quick today.

Hologram Madness

Meant to have this up a little earlier, arg. Anways, I wasn't a big fan of the Tupac hologram but it sure did seem to get people's interest. Perhaps we are just seeing the beginning of hologram performances (something I'd personally never pay money to see). Geel's hologram device previously appeared in this cartoon from last year, which can be viewed by clicking HERE.

When Nature Calls

Always got to check in with Alien and Dog's two main bad guys every now and then. If you are new to Alien and Dog, the bad guys are General Zlorr and his evil robot (unnamed, maybe I should come up with one?) If anyone enjoys these characters, here are some links for a few previous cartoons featuring Zlorr and his robot: HERE, HERE, and HERE. One thing is certain, the two adversaries will return to cause problems....

The Dark Knight Rises....early.

I am eagerly awaiting the summer blockbusters coming up: The Avengers, the new Spiderman, and most of all the third Batman- The Dark Knight Rises. I think it looks great- you can watch the trailer on youtube HERE. I also think the bad guy Bane will be fantastic, despite people clamoring that you can't hear what he's saying over his mask (hence Kevin's mumbling in the cartoon).
On a little side note, I need to improve my backgrounds in my cartoons. I wanted a better looking movie theater behind them but decided to post the cartoon as is to keep from a longer delay.

Happy Easter!!

While I do not have a new Easter themed Alien and Dog cartoon, I do have one from 2010 that I can post in the spirit of the holiday. I still think it holds up pretty good today, although my drawing style has probably improved a little bit. Hope everyone has a great Easter ( and hopefully no one gets any Peeps in their Easter baskets, those things are like little yellow marshmallow turds).
And I'll have a brand new cartoon up very soon!
